“Are you sure you don’t need help?” Violet asked as she appreciated the view.

“I’ve got this.” Nicholas continued digging the hole for the tree they were trying to plant.

His muscles bunched as he dug. Violet rubbed her hand along her throat. Nicholas paused and wiped his sweaty forehead. Violet rushed forward with the towel and rubbed along his forehead then down his face to his chest.

“Someone is hot and bothered.” Nicholas amused and heated gaze studied her.

Violet didn’t say anything just continued to wipe the sweat off. Nicholas touched her hand and winked. Violet gulped and sighed before stepping back and giving him space to work. Nicholas went back to digging the hole. As he did she bit her lip as the sexy, luscious, powerful man before her made her want to take him somewhere and have her way with him.

“I feel I should be doing something.”

“You are doing something. Your watching me is giving me incentive.” Nicholas stopped a moment and flexed his muscles. “Nothing like a beautiful woman who loves you watching you to make you feel all sexy and powerful.”

“You are such a tease.” Violet chuckled. “Here I’m thinking that it’s wrong that I’m ogling you. When you knew good and well what I was doing.”

“Why do you think I offered to dig the hole?” Nicholas continued digging the hole.

Violet breathed out and looked away. She glanced around the garden they had been working on. The flowerbeds looked great. They planted other trees around the area. The tree Nicholas was working on was the last one they had planned. They still had the various benches and other garden decorations to put in once everything was in place.

“Let’s get this tree planted.”

Violet hurried over seeing that he was finished with the hole. Together they wrestled the tree into the open earth. Then they worked on getting it settled and all set up so he could grow eventually bigger and taller. Once they were done they stepped back.

“This is looking really good. Great job.” Nicholas held up his hand.

Violet high-fived him. “We do good work together.”

“We do. Although it did take someone a challenge to figure that out.” Nicholas slung his arm around her shoulders. “It was very interesting watching you fight all this magnetism.”

“It was interesting watching all this magnetism as it tried to convince me to give them a chance.” Violet countered as she poked him in the side. “It was also very interesting that you thought you were controlling things.”

“Yeah .” Nicholas smiled sheepishly. “The realization that we were in this together was an epiphany of sorts. You’re my unexpected everything.”

“That’s a good way to put it. Unexpected everything and we’re building and learning about each other. Even when we think we know everything about each other we won’t. I love the idea of discovering things about you.” Violet hugged him. “Here’s to our future unexpected everything.”

“Someone is making something that smells really good.” Ryson spoke from behind her.

“Oatmeal.” Khandi replied as she continued to stir the pot. “I felt in the mood for some.”

“Until I tasted your oatmeal I didn’t understand why people liked it.” Ryson chuckled. “And I still remember the first time I told you that. You had that same look on your face.”

“You mean my scandalized and you don’t know what you’re missing look.” Khandi rolled her eyes. “Yeah I had to school you on oatmeal.”

“And school me you did. I didn’t realize that you just didn’t follow the directions on the back of oatmeal.” Ryson shrugged sheepishly. “And you didn’t put all kind of junk in it to make it palatable.”

“You poor poor oatmeal deprived man.” she tsked. “You have to put in spices, flavorings and essences. That’s the good way to make oatmeal.”

“I know that now. And that’s because of you. I also know from your various other friends and family that making oatmeal is like making any other kind of dish. Everyone has their own way of making it. And I don’t think form you all that I’ve tasted any that wasn’t good.” Ryson leaned on the counter next to her. “I didn’t have any idea what I was missing all those years. Thank you for introducing me to the oatmeal conundrum.”

“I have no idea why or where that came from. It was just a thing of calling it that. Because like a conundrum oatmeal can be a confusing problem which is hard to solve. Like why some people make it a certain way or others. Or why some people don’t like it but others do. Personally in my opinion when someone doesn’t like oatmeal it can be that they haven’t tasted it the way we all make it.” Khandi stirred the pot as she contemplated it.

“I think it’s a brilliant way to think of it. When I mentioned about it to some of the other friends I have here in Rowan as well as in other cities I was surprised how many had such interesting varying views about oatmeal. As well as a number of other things even if they say or think of it different ways. It basically is the same or similar. Like bread, books, tea, movies, sewing, games, music and a whole lot of other things.”

“True. There are thoughts on a lot of things.” Khandi gestured. “Get the bowls. Have you heard there’s a tentative plan to make various groups for things. Sort of what they have planned for the anniversary one up each other.”

“Yeah. I posted the video I made in the anniversary one.” Ryson snickered as he got the bowls.

“Oh boy. All of the musicians and songwriters are about to get even more involved.” Khandi shook her head. “It’s amazing even with distance that many are so invested. Or as you mentioned have varying views that they can share for any number of things. And it can connect us.”

“Hey. That’s another conundrum.” Ryson held the bowls.

“Yep. For now, I’m about to enjoy the oatmeal conundrum.” Khandi served the oatmeal.

“How’d I let you talk me into this?” Mitchell stared at the crowd of people. “I really think our time would be much better spent at home on the couch.”

“Nope. We promised that we’d try new things.” Chailyn laughed and tugged him forward.

“I don’t remember it being in that conversation. I remember you in the conversation mentioning we should try new things.” Mitchell followed along. “My mistake was not strongly disagreeing with you at the time. Past Mitchell was foolish. Current Mitchell is paying the price. Future Mitchell will know better next time. “

”You do know talking about yourself in multiple ways is kinda weird.” Chailyn looked around and waved at people they recognize as well as some Mitchell didn’t know.

“It is but I’m sticking with it because obviously I need to have all of them so I don’t get outsmarted by you again.” Mitchell cautiously nodded to the people he recognized.

He looked around and many seem to be having a lot of fun. That’s one of the many things the city Rowan had— many events so you could have some fun, meet people and have things to do. He knew of some of the events they had. But lately Chailyn had been filling him in on others.

“How’d you find out about this anyway?” Mitchell stopped his attention caught by the booth.

“The city’s event newsletter.”

“The what?” Mitchell returned his attention to her. “There’s a newsletter about events.”

“Yep. It’s on the website for the city.” Chailyn shrugged. “Since we’ve been discussing things we could do together I figured I’d check out Rowan’s website they had about the city. Then as I explored the site which by the way has a lot of stuff.”

“You went down the rabbit hole.” Mitchell laughed.

“You have no idea.” Chailyn rolled her eyes. “Anyway we’re not going to get into my rabbit hole tendencies. I stumbled upon the events newsletter and signed up. So I get information about things going on or coming up around Rowan. It’s going to be so fun.”

“Yay.” Mitchell eyed her then narrowed his eyes. ”How much of the Kincaid 15 or your siblings or their siblings did you sign up for this newsletter?”

“I might have signed up all of them.” Chailyn laughed a wicked sound.

“Good job.” Mitchell high-fived her. “At least I won’t be the only one suffering… enjoying it so much.” He amended as she glared at him. “Since my lovely woman has found such things for us to do together.”

“Nice save.” Chailyn patted him. “Go ahead I know you want to go check out the caramel.”
“I love you.” He kissed her cheek and hurried off.

“Yeah yeah.” Chailyn muttered.

Mitchell didn’t pay any attention all his focus on the booth. He stopped before it. All the delectable goodies were on display. He didn’t even know where to begin.

“Sample?” The man behind the table said.

”Yes.” Mitchell said as another deep voice echoed him. He turned his head and smiled recognizing the man next to him. “Cal,” he looked behind him before speaking to make sure Chailyn wasn’t close. “you got suckered into this to.”

“We’re going to have a discussion about this suckered business.” Chailyn called from where she stood with her sister Cassandra — one of the Kincaid 15 — while they waited for them.

“I’m here willingly, with all my heart and soul.” Calhoun who was involved with Cassandra looked behind him slyly. “Right Cass.”

“Whipped.” Mitchell coughed then pushed him lightly. “Stop trying to get me in trouble.”

“You don’t need any help.” Calhoun returned the push. “You should know better. If you don’t act like you enjoying it they’re going to keep doing it to torture you.” Calhoun lowered his voice. “We both know I’d rather be home writing music. Than out here with all these people. People.” Calhoun whispered eyes wide. “Save me.”

“We’re going to discuss about this acting like you enjoy it to get out of stuff.” Cassandra called.

“They have such good hearing. “The man said simultaneously then snickered.

“I’m being punished for-“

Mitchell interrupted. “Signing you all up for hosting stuff. Even I know better than to do that.” He looked at him pityingly. “You’re in for so much torture. There is no saving you buddy.”

“Some friend you are.” Calhoun sighed.

“Here is your sample.” The man behind the table stated.

Eagerly Mitchell took the offered treat. He saw Calhoun do the same. Mitchell took a bite and closed his eyes as the delicious flavors burst over his tongue. He made an obscene noise and heard Calhoun do the same.

“Can’t take them anywhere.” Chailyn smacked him lightly on the hip. “You only should be making a noise like that for me. Are you going to share?”

Mitchell opened his eyes and looked at her. “You know how I’d do anything for love.” He went to give her piece then reverse and put it into his mouth. “But that.”

“Ditto.” Calhoun said.

Mitchell saw Calhoun also eat the rest of his treat. The men laughed then high-fived each other.

“They have no idea what is about to happen.” Chailyn stated.

“Nope they don’t.” Cassandra high-fived with her sister.

Uneasily Mitchell exchanged glances with Calhoun.

“Ladies your men didn’t want you to not have the full experience.” The man behind the table spoke. “They want you to have all of this instead of just giving that little piece.”

He held out a new piece for each of the ladies. Chailyn and Cassandra stepped forward. The man gestured slightly with his head. Taking the hint Mitchell stepped forward as well as Calhoun. They took the piece and held it out to their respective women. Chailyn eyed him as Cassandra did the same to Calhoun.

“If I was you, seeing as he just saved your butt I’d make sure get his name and make friends. Not to mention since he makes caramel things which is one of your candy weaknesses it might behoove you to again make a friend.” Chailyn said dryly.

“Ditto.” Cassandra said.

As the women ate the treat Mitchell looked at the man then inclined his head and saw that Calhoun did the same. The man winked before going to tend to other customers.

Cassandra paused as the melody played. She smiled. It seemed like Calhoun had worked out the kinks of the song he’d been working on. As usual the sound of him playing just did something to her. She loved that fluttery feeling she got in her belly.

“The sensation of you along my skin…”

Calhoun’s sexy voice filled the air and Cassandra sighed. The song reminded her of the ballad he’d done once before. The melody like this one spoke of the power of loving a woman. She recalled when he had sung it to her as a way to declare his love for her. Calhoun turned from the piano and lifted his saxophone to his lips. As he blew the notes to the song she was swept away with the passion, love and temptation of the song. She entered the room going to the piano and looking at the sheet and words for the song. She followed along as he played.

“… with each moment we are forever one.” Cassandra looked between the sheets with the lyrics and him.

Calhoun gazed at her the love in his eyes made her heart race. As he wound down the song she read the last few lines then stepped close to him. She cupped his cheek and sang the words into his face. As the last note sounded and he removed the saxophone from his lips she stepped into him and kissed him. Calhoun met her and each stroke of his tongue in her mouth lit a fire in her. He gently pulled back and stared into her eyes.

“You know the guys are going to be so pissed at me.” His eyes crinkled in the corners as he smiled. “I can imagine what they’re going to say now. Damn you Calhoun for writing another ballad.”

“Yeah Shamar and Hunter are going to be pissed. Maybe the other one and this one will finally convince Shamar who hasn’t released any new albums in years to do one. He’s still one of the most talked about and played R&B singers. Especially with the video of him and Hunter performing the other ballad you had written.” Cassandra shook her head.

“Although Hunter is the current heartthrob on the top of the R&B charts the two of them together created a frenzy when that video came out. One of my sisters I’m sure did it but none of them would admit it.” She shook her head, again. “Between you and them they don’t stand a chance of resisting the ballad. People are still talking about it and want the song. So, are you planning to write a bunch of songs for them?”

“You know I’m devious like that.” Calhoun wiggled his eyebrows. “I’m going to write most of it. But knowing Hunter and Shamar who tends to write their songs they will have some of their own. Although they keep denying what had happened with the ballad I wrote didn’t have an effect on them. Such a load of crap.”

“Yeah we all know how doth protest too much.” Cassandra snorted. “Similar to someone I know who was oblivious to what was right before him.” She looked at him pointedly.

“I’m never going to live that down. “Calhoun smiled sheepishly.

“Nope.” She kissed his nose gently. “We’ll be old gray with teeth falling out and I’ll still remind you. “

“I’m sure you will.” Calhoun narrowed his eyes. “Really you have to go to the old gray and all that with teeth falling out.”

“I’m just telling the expectation for our future together.” She smirked. “We’re going to be together a long time. Since you worked your musical effect on me. I’m holding onto you and never letting go.”

“I’m good with that.” Calhoun stared into her eyes. “So my love, my heart, my soul and my buddy in deviousness you want in on getting those two stubborn men to bow to our will. “

“Oh yeah I’m so in. And I’m sure the Kincaid 15, my sisters, as well as sibling and the sibling for the rest of my sister would gladly give assistance.” Cassandra cackled. “And this might also give a slight nudge nudge push push to some folks there some sparks flying with some of your friends. Stubbornness seems to run in all of them.”

“I don’t know if I should feel sorry for my buddies or get popcorn and watch the fireworks from the sidelines. “

“I’m planning to do both.” Cassandra shook her head. “Your buddies are…wow. My sisters I feel sorry for trying to get that man if they want them. Anyway it’ll be entertaining, so lots of popcorn. Okay maybe they’ll be swept away like we were with the musical effect.”
