Today’s Snippet features characters from Body Cravings, Protective Pursuits, Book #1. Enjoy!

From time to time there’s multi-part Snippet’s that go together. I think of it as a Snippet Serial and I name them. The below Snippet Serial Unperplexed features the books at the time I wrote these Snippet’s that were available in my Protective Pursuitsseries. Eventually when books are released in the Protective Pursuits series an Snippet might be written and if it is it will be added to the Unperplexed Snippet Serial. So this Snippet Serial is a continuous one (at my discretion/time permits).

Jacques put the last items on the tray and took it toward the living room. When he entered he frowned seeing the room was empty. He set the tray down on the table and noted the now empty blanket on the couches. Jacques shook his head and headed to where he figured she had went.

He went down the hall and although he didn’t hear anything he instinctively knew where she was. The door to the her home office was open. He stood in the doorway then leaned his shoulder against the doorjamb. Amara sat at the her desk her focus on the computer screen before her. The tiredness on her face made his scowl. He didn’t like seeing it at all. She’d been so busy lately and he’d been to going out of town more often than he liked. So he hadn’t gotten to make sure she took time for her.

“Amara.”

She glanced up and her captivating eyes were almost weary. “I know…I’m not working.” She smiled. “Looking for a getaway for us. We need some time away together.”

“Sounds good to me.” He smiled pleased and went around the desk to join her.

She stood and he took a seat and she settled on his lap. Jacques inhaled and the scent of her filled him. There was nothing like this woman who was his. It made all the busyness in the world go away.

“Promise we won’t get so busy again.” She said.

“I promise even if we do we’ll take time.” He hugged her and turned her head and kissed her.

And not just skyping when they were not in same area, calls or texts. He made a mental note to cut back on his trips. He needed to learn to delegate more. And he would keep that promise. They might be busy but he wouldn’t let that affect either of them. They would damn well take time for each other.

Garrick entered the house closing the door behind him. “Bailey.” He called and waited for an answer.

When none came he frowned. As far as he knew she was supposed to be home already. Hearing a sound he headed for the kitchen. When he arrived in the doorway he stopped. Bailey had her back to him as she wiggled her body then made an sultry sound. Knowing that sound he instantly went hard.

“Bailey.” He said again.

She didn’t reply. He frowned. Garrick approached her.

“Oh my God, it’s raspberry.” Bailey whimpered.

As he got closer he spotted what she had. A pastry made by her friend. He touched her shoulder. Bailey shrieked then turned and punched out and flipped him over her hip.

Ah…shit not again. Garrick hit the ground and his teeth clacked together.

Bailey lowered herself and drove her fist down. She stopped just before his face then blinked as she looked at him.

Garrick lifted an eyebrow.

Bailey pulled out the ear bud and smiled at him sheepishly. “Hey…I didn’t hear you come in.”

“We can tell no one about this.” Garrick rolled his eyes. “I’m just finally making people forget about the last time you put me on my ass.” He glanced toward where the pastries were on the counter. “If I recall pastry was involved then too.”

“It was.” Bailey laughed. “You really need to stop sneaking up on me.”

“I came in called out to you.” Garrick said. “That’s not sneaking.”

“I didn’t hear you because of the ear buds.” Bailey knelt and placed her hand on his chest. “Are you ok?”

“I’m going to need some Epsom Salt to soak.” He glared at her playfully. “A wild woman attacked me to defend her pastry.”

You should know better than getting between a woman and her pastries.’ Bailey laughed again. She leaned over and kissed him gently.

He opened and returned it.

“What the hell are you doing on the floor?” A familiar masculine voice asked.

Garrick groaned as he heard it. He forgotten he’d invited Tyr over. Bailey pulled back and laughed.

Garrick sat up. “I slipped on a banana peel.”

“I don’t see any.” Tyr shook his head. “Bailey you really need to stop throwing the man on the floor. Or at least make sure someone is around so we can get pictures as proof.”

“Next time I promise.” Bailey rose and went to Tyr hugging him.

“Hey…wait how the hell did you get into my house?” Garrick rose and stifled a groan.

“Indigo let me in.” Tyr replied.

“I didn’t know she was here.”

“She’s in the media room.” Bailey said. “I was making some tea and getting the pastries she brought.” Bailey smiled sheepishly. “I got distracted.”

“By eating them.” Garrick went to her and teased. He pulled her from Tyr.

“And putting you on your ass.”Tyr retorted then laughed. “Wait until the crew hears this one.” He left the kitchen laughing.

“I—“

Bailey kissed him. Garrick returned it and tasting the raspberry and chocolate he was reminded of how they meet. At least this time he got to taste the yummy pastry. It didn’t taste as good as kissing Bailey did. He held her close.

Spencer pressed the button and smiled as One by Mary J. Blige and U2 played. He sat down and relaxed on the couch. He wanted to forget all about the day he’d had at the hospital.

“Hard day.”

He glanced toward the door and spotted Reggie. No matter that they’d been childhood sweethearts and married for so long she still took his breath away. As he watched her he thought of the time they had been apart due to not communicating about their loss. He was so grateful that was behind them. Especially on days like this one when he needed her. Only she could soothe him and make when the world was shitty for it to be all right.

He didn’t reply just watched her. Reggie came to him. She was already in her home clothing so she’d been home a while. She sat beside him on the couch and pressed against his side. He slid his hand along her inner thigh and turned into her body. Reggie curled her arms around him and held him. Spencer closed his eyes and just let all that was her seep into him.

This was all he needed at this moment. Just being part of what made them an us.

Remy stood feet braced apart staring out into the night. Being on the rooftop of the building afforded him a place to think. He really missed Mia. She’s been away for a few weeks on business and this time due to his own obligations he didn’t get to go with her.

Get over it Remy she’s going to be gone for at least another two weeks. Remy started thinking of ways to rearrange his schedule to be with her.

“Another rooftop.” A sexy voice so familiar and dear spoke behind him.

Remy turned startled to see her as if he conjured her up.

“Mia.” He breathed out. “How did you get here and I not feel you?

“Seems like someone has been moping about.” Mia strolled toward him that sexy strut of hers making him want her so much.

“So that someone’s brothers decided to come get me.” Mia smiled. “As a surprise. They cloaked me and flew me here.”

“Which one?” He walked toward her drawn to the woman who was his heart, soul and very breath. His other being settled as its mate was there.

“All of them had a hand in it.” Mia came to stand before him. “But Dubrinsky brought me.”

“Although I want to thank him.” Remy pulled her close. “I also want to smash his face in for flying with you. You only fly with me.” He lowered his head and inhaled her scent deeply then growled.

“Oh lord. Stop being all possessive.” Mia put her hands on his neck. “When I fly with you it’s something deeper.”

“So you like flying with me.” He smirked.

“Duh…you sound like Goliath from the Gargoyles cartoons. “ She shivered. “And you are a real life Gargoyle to. One I happen to be married to.”

“That’s the human term for it. The right term is Garlven.” Remy pointed out.

“I know.” Mia smirked. “I just love to see what my calling it by the human term does to you.”

“So you like making my eye twitch and voice get all growly.”

“And I repeat. Duh…” She laughed.

The soft drops of rain fell. Remy lifted his face to it. He let his wings flare then placed his hands on her hips. He lowered his wings shielding her from the rain.

Mia burrowed into his embrace. “I missed you Remy.”

“Ditto.” He replied using one of her favorite terms.

Mia chuckled again then sobered starting at him. “Let’s fly.”

As soon as she said the words he shielded her from the rain then unfurled his wings and lifted them. The sound of the air moving with his wings filled the air and he shot straight up into the New York night. Mia joyous laughter filled the rainy night around them.

Wesley glanced at Peyton standing across the yard talking to Pandora, her sisters, aunts, mom and other women at the party. He wondered what mischief the women were up to now. As if sensing his gaze Peyton glanced at him and winked. Although he was too far away to see the look in her gaze he figured it was that mischievous I am up to no good one. Then again maybe he really didn’t want to know. And he sent up a quick prayer it didn’t involve him.

“I hope that whatever they are up to doesn’t involve us.” Ian standing to his right said.

There were sounds of agreement from Savage, Zyric, Peyton’s dad, uncles and brothers as well as other men standing with Wesley.

Wesley figured as he was the men were looking at the women and from their body language, looks toward them and just plain when they got together it lead to trouble they knew they were up to something.

The women suddenly all laughed then headed toward them. Watching Peyton as it always did made Wesley hard. She had this innate rhythm that made him think of music that was wild untamed and so sexy.

“Shit.” Zyric said. “Pandora is smiling.”

Wesley glanced at her and saw she was. That didn’t bode well at all.

“Sinai too.” Ian sighed. “We are so screwed.”

Wesley noticed the wide smirk on Sinai’s face and yeah that was even worst. The women stopped a few steps from them. He noted those who were involved with someone stood before that person while the others just paired off with someone. So it was a man facing a woman.

“Oh lord.” Peyton’s father said. “My wife is…”

As he spoke all the women clothing changed. Wesley felt the magic surge in the air and from the sensation he knew it was Peyton’s mother. The high-collared skin-tight leather body suit, ankle boots and various weapons adorned each women and was meant to intimidate. The body suits and boots matched and were in different colors based on person wearing it. But all Wesley saw was how sexy Peyton looked in her dark rich red clothing. She winked at him again.
Move slow. She telepathically brushed his mind with her words.

Confused he didn’t know what she meant. Peyton’s mom strode out of the line and walked before them. He’d only seen her in more casual flowing clothing. It was amazing how what she wore seemed to change her mannerism. As she walked he could see where her kids had gotten their power and intimidating persona when on the hunt.

“Usually we have a competition. This time the ladies and I decided let’s make it more entertaining. Also to get in some practice.” She smiled and it wasn’t at all comforting. “So we’re the hunters and you will be our targets.” She started back down the line toward them. “We’ll give you a five minute head start.” She then went on to tell them the rules of engagement and that the weapons were loaded with rubber darts that was more of sting, any others like whips and ropes were for containment once caught. The winner of this would be determined by counting who was caught. So if more males were caught by women then the women won and vice versa. “So any questions.”

“Are we allowed to use our own weapons?” Ian asked unsheathing his claws. “Or powers.”

“Of course.” She smiled. “We want to at least give you a fighting chance.”

Wesley knew she didn’t mention not injuring each other since this was all in fun. And they would ensure that it was that and nothing else.

Peyton’s mother stopped just to his left and spoke again. “May the best women win.”

“You mean men.” Peyton’s dad retorted.

“Whatever you think I mean dear.” Peyton’s mother smiled wider.

“God woman you look…” Peyton’s dad grabbed her mother and pulled her to him kissing her.

“Mom…Dad.” The kids cried out.

“I’m scarred for life.” Sinai said covering her eyes.

“We’ve been that for a long time.” Peyton said sighing. She came forward and tugged on her mom.

The couple clung them released each other.

Peyton’s mother breathed out then said in a husky voice. “Don’t try to distract me man.”

“Anytime woman.” Peyton’s dad winked.

“Go.” Peyton’s Mom yelled.

People moved. Ian took off in a run toward Sinai then jumped in mid-air he shifted and from his trajectory he should have taken her down thus winning.

“Not that easy, kitty.” She shimmered and was gone.

Ian landed almost delicately on the ground, he made a growling sound then took off. Wesley shook his head. Seemed like Ian thought he was the one hunting Sinai but Wesley knew the woman was actually lulling Ian into a false sense of the chase.

Pandora pulled a wall of water and laughing she surrounded Zyric and herself. Suddenly the air peeled back and the shadows enveloped them. With Pandora using her gifts and Zyric the shadows Wesley figured they wouldn’t see them again for a while. Then again many of the others who were couples probably wouldn’t be seen for a while. He wondered if the women realized that even if caught the men wouldn’t mind so much. He hardened even more thinking of what he and Peyton could get up to.

“Aren’t you running?” Peyton asked right in front of him.

Wesley looked down and blinked. He hadn’t heard her approach. “I’m moving slow as you said I should.”

“At least let me chase you a little.” She pouted. “Make the blood get all flowing and stuff. Then when I catch you I can have you.” She leaned in and said next to his ear. “Anyway I want too.”

“Maybe I’m the one who will catch you.” Wesley countered.

“Ohh…” Peyton said. “That works for me.” She wavered then was gone leaving laughter in her wake.

He centered himself then connected with her mentally. Wesley smiled turned then started to run. Time for the hunt.

Stephen stretched then looked at the time and winced. He was going to be late and he hated being late. He picked up the phone to call Vanessa. A knock on the door made him look up. He set the phone down then rose.

“Vanessa.” He smiled watching her stride in.

“Figured you’d get caught up in paperwork so bringing food to you for a change. “ Vanessa held up the bag she had brought and came around the desk. “Now I know that you have food here and your day chef may get offended.” She paused then. “Don’t tell Tobias either. I wanted to surprise you so didn’t call them.”

“I won’t tell. “ He paused. “Maybe. What you gonna give me to not tell?”

“Ohhh..bribery is against the law.” She stopped beside him and set the bag on the desk. “Hmmm…I’m going to think of something.”

She lifted her head and he met her kissing her gently. Vanessa placed her hands on his chest. They pulled back and stared into each other’s eyes.

“Busy day.” She wasn’t asking.

“Yeah.” Stephen slid his hands around his waist. “I was looking forward to a break and seeing you. Thought I would need to cancel.”

“I came to you instead.” Vanessa smiled. “Let’s eat and tell each other about our days.”

“Sounds good to me.” He kissed her again and thought of how great it was to have her here.

Killian sighed. That woman was going to give him gray-hair. He walked toward the living room and stopped in the doorway. He leaned against the frame and stared at Storm.

She was laughing as she sneaked into the balcony door. “Tell me to not go somewhere. Hah. You can’t keep me where I don’t want to be.” Storm turned then stilled as she saw him.

Killian stifled a chuckle as her head lifted and the defiant look he loved so much filled her face. He would of course never tell her that it would only make her do even more crazy stuff.

“Snuck out again.” Killian crossed his hand over his chest. “What am I going to do with you?”

Storm sashayed over to him then stopped before him. She smiled and kissed him gently. “Love me.”

“Of course.” He chuckled and pulled her close and kissed her deeply.

Storm was as wild as she was before they became one and he wouldn’t have her any other way.

Syn glanced around the club. Visually she noted the patrons were all having a good time. She reached out mentally to ensure there was no issues. Finding none she smiled. Then she sought him out mentally but when she couldn’t sense him Syn frowned. Where the hell was Micah? She knew he was here somewhere since they had arrived earlier together. Yet he was blocking her for some reason.

Suddenly she felt a sensation she knew so well and she smiled. Turning Syn stepped forward and Micah detached from the wall and took her into his arms.

“Dance for me.” He whispered.

Syn smiled remembering that first night so long ago that she had done the same thing. At the time she was just letting lose not expecting to find him yet she had. She stepped back then rotating her hips she let the music sweep her away. She lifted her hands over her head and moved. She rolled her hips in time with the music then smiled at him.

Micah stood watching as he had all those years ago. As it had the intensity of his rich lavender gaze caught her. Syn breathed out and his scent filled her senses. She beckoned him to her. Micah moved forward already dancing. The carnal power of his movements made her breath catch. As he came to her Syn knew she would never again forget that moment their eyes met across the floor.

“A woman loves a man that can bake,” Chailyn said.

“If I recall you said something similar to me about cooking.” Payne laughed. “I guess it’s true about food being a way to a woman’s heart.”

“Damn skippy.” Chailyn hurried into the kitchen and sat at the kitchen island. “You made me bread pudding. Your brothers bread pudding.” She bounced on the chair and made grabby hands.

“A lesser man would be offended by the way you seem to be longing after my brother.” Payne rolled his eyes. “Technically since I made it it’s my bread pudding.”

“But you used his recipe. Which you know I’m longing after his recipe for bread pudding.” Chailyn blinked her eyes enticingly. “And you know it. Maybe I’ll long after you if you change your mind about giving it to me.”

“I still can’t tell you. My brother would kill me.” Payne laughed as he set the plate with a piece of bread pudding before her. “You know how he loves messing with all you women who try to entice some of his various recipes you love out of him.”

“Yeah.” She sighed and picked up her fork. “And he won’t give it up no matter the enticement we offer.”

“He’s made of stern stuff.” He sat beside her with his own plate before he picked up his own fork.

“Yeah, so are you. You keep refusing to give up recipes.” She ate a piece and moaned. “OMG I’ll give you anything.”

“Making promises like that is dangerous.” Payne laughed. “Especially when you are under the influence of the power of bread pudding.”

“It would be so worth it. I love the power of bread pudding. Give me all the power of bread pudding. What do you want? I know it’s something since you whipped out something you know that makes me a weak weak woman.” She stuffed more in her mouth and moaned loudly.

“A lesser man would be offended by the way you seem to be making love to bread pudding.” Payne eyed her. “Although I made it I’m feeling jealous of bread pudding.”

“It’s okay you’re sexier than bread pudding. Maybe.” Chailyn snickered as she continued to eat. “You better lay whatever it is you want on me before the power of bread pudding wears off.”

“There is a lot more bread pudding where that came from.” Payne shrugged. “I was talking to a few people here and in other cities. They mentioned they used their talents to get their partners to agree to things.” Payne took a bite of his bread pudding. “But I thought that was sneaky so I didn’t agree with doing that.”

“So this isn’t a bribe then?” Chailyn asked.

“No. It’s my needing to think of how to convince you of something and needed to think.” Payne shrugged. “So I decided to bake bread pudding.”
“Awww…you’re so sweet. Not bribing for something.” She ate more. “But you do know technically you might not have meant to bribe. But this is sure as hell a good incentive.” Chailyn rose and pulled something out her pocket and put it on the table next to him.

“Here’s a list of shelters. I prefer us to go to one of them. And yes you can have more than one so they won’t be lonely.” She patted him on the cheek. “Also when you and people are discussing things, making plans, or anything don’t think your partners aren’t wise to you. We talk also.”

Chailyn walked past him then snagged another piece of bread pudding before heading for the door.

“So you already knew? Then why did you let me stewing for weeks?” Payne narrowed his eyes.

“You were so cute.” Chailyn paused in the doorway and looked over her shoulder. “You have this thing you do with your face. It makes me horny.”

“Is that why you kept jumping me?” Payne laughed.

“Yep.” Chailyn chuckled. “It was fun watching you work things out. Take a look at the paperwork and let me know when you’re ready to go.”

“I can’t believe that’s all it took for you to agree for us to get a few pets.”

“As I said it might not have been planned as a bribe,” she took another bite. “But it sure as hell is an incentive. That’s all in my favor.” she rushed back and grabbed the pan of bread pudding and ran out the room.

“There’s another one in the oven.” Payne called after her.

“I know.” She called back. “I’ll be back for it later.”

“You can’t possibly eat all that bread pudding.” Payne rose to follow her. “You’re going to make yourself sick. Although that would be a memory like the family likes to do with things. But we don’t want that kind of memory.”

“Mine.” Chailyn cried.

Payne heard her running. He knew it was his fault. She’s been asking him to make bread pudding for a while. But he’d been so busy he hadn’t had a chance.

“Damn, the power bread pudding has gotten to her.” He sighed and went after her. “Chailyn you can’t eat all of that or you’re going to get sick. I promise I’ll make bread pudding for you whenever you want.”

“Okay.” She looked out of their entertainment room and smirked. “Promises are binding.”

“Ohhh… You sneaky woman.” Payne headed down the hall after her.

“Yes. I have won the power of bread pudding. Anytime I want.” Chailyn laughed and went into the room.

Payne shook his head and ran down the hall.
